Mattresses have developed well over the years to provide you with a comfortable place to sleep and ensure that you get a good night’s rest. From primitive straw in sacks back in the very beginnings of time, we have come a long way and now have hygienic, safe, supportive and comfortable places to rest our weary bodies at a night time. So when it comes to choosing a mattress for you, make sure that you are aware of all of the options that are out there and go for something that will suit your personal needs.
The type of mattress available to you does, admittedly, get better as you throw more money at the decision. However, this is something worth paying that little bit extra for and you will always get your money’s worth. Sleeping takes up a lot of human time- 240 hours a month as a rough figure, so a new mattress is definitely something to set aside a good amount of cash for, as you use it more than you think.
The basics you need to know are as follows:
Open coil mattresses consist of a set of springs within the fabric casing of the mattress shell. These all work together when you lie on them- but the trouble is that they can become misshapen with over wear and they are not as well supported within themselves as the pocket sprung mattresses that we will be looking at next. It is the weight distribution that can cause harm to an open coil mattress, so if you make sure that you flip it over regularly, then it should wear well as not all of the pressure will be on one side.
A pocket sprung mattress works in the same way, with springs, but each spring is in its own fabric pocket, meaning that it is unlikely to bend into awkward shapes as much, as it is supported and restrained, if you will, by its own cage. Within this type of mattress you can also get the type where there is one larger and one smaller (double sprung) spring within each pocket, which work together to make sure that they hold up weight really well.
Mattresses with springs are the cheaper end of the spectrum, but as you can see, they can get pricey too as technology added extra springs, pockets and more features for general overall comfort. A pocket sprung mattress should ideally be the cheapest you look at if you want a proper mattress that will last many years.
If you have more money, or wish you deal with orthopaedic problems such as back pain though, then why not look towards the latest revolution of memory foam? Mae of tempur-pedic foam, it reacts to your body heat and produces a perfect replica of your shape in the mattress, so you have the exact supportive shape you need, without any misalignment of the spine. Created by NASA originally, this is now a very popular choice for mattresses. They are expensive, but very worth it for health reasons as well as comfort. If you cannot afford a proper memory foam mattress though, then even the most basic of beds can be enhanced with a memory foam topper, so you get some of the benefits without the cost. These do not last as long though, as the foam gets suppressed, so make sure that if you can afford to stretch your budget, that you go for the real things if you can: after all, comfort is never something to be put at the bottom of a priority list.
